The winners of the 2022 Jhalak prizes, which recognise "writers who feel that their work is frequently marginalised unless it fulfils a romantic fetishisation of their cultural heritage," have been revealed in the United Kingdom.

Sabba Khan won the sixth Jhalak Prize for Book of the Year for The Roles We Play, her striking' and impeccable' debut graphic novel (Myriad). Maisie Chan, a young adult author, was awarded the Jhalak Children's and Young Adult Prize for her 'warm and hilarious' children's novel Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths (illus by Anh Cao, Piccadilly Press). They are each given £1000 ($1765).

'This year, the judges have chosen two pioneering works that are bold, full of heart, and create new ground for publishing today, opening avenues to writers and creatives of colour who will follow,' said prize director Sunny Singh. These are two new literary canon books.'

Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi for The First Woman (Oneworld) and Patrice Lawrence for Eight Pieces of Silva (Hodder Children's Books) were last year's winners.
